Following an excellent sailing season in 2023, Saturday 4th November very sadly saw the temporary closure of the NSSC clubhouse building at Seaford. This was due to the steel structure of the building no longer being safe following decades of exposure to the natural elements. After over 50 years of use without major refurbishment, the clubhouse building has reached the end of its life and requires extensive rebuilding work if it is to re-open again.

The building has been opened daily as a café over the past fifteen years, and has proven to be a popular place for local people and tourists to meet and eat. It is hoped going forward that the new building might also be available for events.

The clubhouse was built in the 1970’s and was originally funded from members’ donations. Originally, only the upper level was built on top of a steel structure, and later filled in below to create toilets and changing rooms. Over the years the steel has corroded and the building is no longer safe. It is time to do some significant repairs, as well as to take the opportunity to update the facilities to modern standards, give better access to disabled users, and to meet current standards of Safeguarding.

To repair the building, we are going to need to replace a significant amount of the steelwork. This work is being carried out by professionals. Once they have finished, we will be replacing the front of the building with new doors and windows and redecorating the inside of the building. The white plastic cladding around the building will be replaced by something with better insulation properties.

This is a huge project, that has come at a difficult time for the club during the cost-of-living crisis. Over many years, the club has carefully saved away £185,000 in readiness for future anticipated building works. However, we do not yet have enough saved to complete the major project that now faces us. To complete the structural repairs and to be able to get the building functional again, we require a minimum of £205,000. This is based on multiple quotations for the various stages of building work required.
