Introduction to Newhaven and Seaford Sailing Club (NSSC)

Newhaven and Seaford Sailing Club was formed in 1952 by a group of enthusiasts who sailed from Newhaven and later from the beach near the old Buckle Inn at Seaford. Later the Club obtained the rights to sail on Piddinghoe Lake some 5 miles away. Subsequently the present clubhouse on the beach was built, for which the club now has the freehold, and the freehold to the Lake acquired. The Club has an average membership of about 450. The Club regularly has 6 fleets: Laser 1s, Dart 18s, Squibs, Toppers, Optimists and a handicap fleet.

Racing takes place on Sundays throughout the year (on the sea in Summer and on the Lake during the Winter months); a series is also run on Wednesday evenings during the Summer months. The Club hosts open meetings during the year, has a regatta at the beginning of August each year and holds a cadet week (open) at the end of August.

Strategy

The Club, at both Seaford and Piddinghoe, boasts clean, comfortable showers and changing rooms, to which members have access at all times. There is generous boat parking at both sites and there is limited under cover storage space at Seaford. The Club uses the berthing at Newhaven Marina for its Keel-boat Section and for the Club powerboats (location).

Cadet

The Club boasts a strong cadet section. Over 150 youngsters take part each year in courses including our own Cadet Week and in competitions with cadets from other local clubs. Our cadets also take courses leading to RYA Stages 1, 2 & 3 as well as the red and white badges in both racing and seamanship.

Training Centre

Dinghy and keelboat sailing, power-boating and wind surfing are also taught in the Club, which is a RYA Recognised Teaching Centre. While the majority of the courses are held on Piddinghoe Lake some are arranged at the sea so that a tidal endorsement can be issued. Courses are run at: RYA levels 1 to 4 in dinghy sailing, RYA Levels 1 and 2, Safety Boat and Advanced power-boating and windsurfing at levels 1 to 5. The Club can also arrange instructor courses for both dinghy sailing and power-boating.

Open Meetings The Club runs a number of open meetings annually, including Sailing Week in the summer. See the Sailing Calendar for further details.

Windsurfing

Members regularly use the Club facilities to go sailing, either in the sheltered waters of Piddinghoe Lake or, for the more experienced, in Seaford Bay from the beach by the club house.

Social

The Club runs a full social programme throughout the year.

Open Day

The Club has an Open Day in the Spring each year at Piddinghoe Lake where local people and potential members can experience a day of sailing and meet club members. No sailing experience is necessary.
